Preparing for Your HBOT Session — What You Need to Know

If you’re new to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), you might be wondering how to prepare for your first session. The good news is that with CryoCube’s 1.5 ATA monoplace chambers, preparation is simple, straightforward, and doesn’t require overly strict hospital-style rules.

Still, there are a few sensible safety steps that will make your session comfortable, effective, and trouble-free.

1. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is ideal — think cotton T-shirts, gym wear, or light loungewear. There’s no need for hospital gowns, and you can dress exactly as you would for relaxing at home.

2. Avoid Aerosol Sprays During the Session

Unlike high-pressure hospital HBOT chambers, CryoCube’s 1.5 ATA chambers don’t require you to completely avoid hair gel or styling products. However:

  • Aerosol sprays (e.g. hairspray, deodorant spray) should not be used inside the chamber or immediately before your session, as they can release vapours in the enclosed space.
  • Hair gel, wax, or mousse is fine as long as it has dried before you start.

This is more about comfort and air quality than safety at our operating pressure.

3. No Smoking, Vaping, or Electronic Devices Inside

For safety and equipment protection:

  • Cigarettes, vapes, and e-cigarettes must not be used inside or around the chamber
  • Avoid bringing in lighters or matches
  • Do not use laptops, tablets, or other electronic devices inside the chamber (unless specifically approved for pressurised environments)

You can, however, keep a phone or tablet outside the chamber for watching or listening during your session.

4. Eat and Drink Lightly Beforehand

A light meal or snack is fine, but avoid heavy, greasy foods right before your session. Stay hydrated — but don’t overdo it immediately before, as you’ll be in the chamber for 60–90 minutes.

5. Manage Ear Pressure Comfortably

During the first few minutes of pressurisation, you may feel a mild pressure in your ears, similar to taking off in a plane. To equalise:

  • Swallow or yawn
  • Perform a gentle Valsalva manoeuvre (pinch your nose and blow gently)

This sensation usually disappears once the chamber reaches its set pressure.

6. Check for Health Considerations

While HBOT is safe for most people, consult your GP before starting if you have:

  • Untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
  • Recent ear or sinus surgery or infections
  • Severe respiratory illness
  • Pregnancy

CryoCube provides a full safety and user guide with every rental.

Because CryoCube’s chambers are designed for safe, comfortable home use, there’s no rush, no travel, and no restrictive hospital dress codes. You control the schedule, the setting, and the pace.
